you know, my dad has a really old nikon that I've been wanting to try out. Do you like your nikon? I've only worked with Canons before. (I love your gallery, by the way. :D)

My advice is to just keep doing it. I mostly shoot people. If you want to do photojournalism-type work, try to be inconspicuous. Carry a camera with you wherever you can. The more you shoot, the better you'll get. :)
